The difference between the AI in Teams Premium and Copilot for Microsoft 365

I've been asked a fair few times about the difference between the AI features included in Teams Premium and Copilot for Microsoft 365, so I thought I would pen a short blog to clarify.

Teams Premium brings a raft of great and well documented features, of which two are AI powered, Live Translation and Intelligence Recap. Live translation (as the name implies) provides live translation of meeting captions and transcripts, while Intelligence Recap offers:

  1. AI-generated notes summarising the meeting.

  2. AI-generated actions with prompted tasks and actions.

  3. AI-generated chapters which allows you to navigate meeting recordings finding where your name was mentioned and when people joined or left the meeting, or even where others were speaking with personalised timeline markers.

Copilot AI inside Teams on the other hand offers what on the surface may seem like similar features, but actually builds on these by adding proactive action suggestions and delving into the contextual detail to uncover why and how decisions were made during meetings, even if you missed the meeting. Use cases include summarising sales calls by capturing questions related to product features, pricing and so on.

Copilot also works with your Teams chat and summarises conversations, making it much simpler to find the details of conversations, as well as allowing the integration of data from sources not just within your Microsoft estate but from third party applications as well.

TLDR: Teams Premium offers a bunch of tools, not just AI Powered meetings, and whilst some of the features of Copilot for Microsoft 365 look similar they don't really compete, so some businesses may end up leveraging both if other features of Teams Premium are on your must have list.
